History of

MIT Hostels

MIT Hostels have excelled in providing good ambience, perfect accommodation, the best facilities, and a safe and comfortable stay for the hostel students. MIT Hostels foster a conducive environment for knowledge sharing, creativity development and across cultural and social backgrounds.

Initially, MIT was inaugurated as a residential college. In 1949, the first batch of students from Kashmir to Kanayakumari stayed in a long-titled block with 30 rooms and 3 persons per room. To economize floor space, wall-shelf-cum-folding tables and built-in cots were used to furnish the hostel rooms. A long mat was initially provided on the mess floor for dining. Also, Mr. C. Rajam, founder of MIT, resided in one of the portions of the tiled block.

Now, MIT hostels sprawl across main and annex campuses, conducting various extracurricular and co-curricular activities and to foster leadership qualities among the students. MIT hostels has 7 boys hostel blocks and 4 girls hostel blocks, accommodating 1000 boys and 800 girls. MIT hostel blocks are named after tamil rivers such as Thamirabarani, Amaravathy, Bhavani, Vaigai, Cauvery, and Ponni. The Rajam hostel block is named after our founder, Mr.Rajam and the Birla hostel block is named after philanthropist Mr. Brila. Other hostel blocks are named after tamil lands such as Kurinji and Marutham. The boy’s international hostel is named after the flower orchid. All MIT hostel blocks provide a green environment, surrounded by trees and lush greenery. There are four mess blocks, where around 1200 students can dine simultaneously.

The MIT Hostel administration consists of the Warden/Dean, Executive Warden and Deputy Wardens, who are Professors from various departments at Madras Institute of Technology Campus, Anna University.
